Englebert Dollfuss

Dollfuss1

It was on 25th July, in 1934, that Engelbert Dollfuss was murdered. He was an Austrian politician of the Christian Social Party turned Fatherland Front who served as Chancellor of Austria from 1932 to 1934.

He was a devout Catholic who strongly opposed Communism and Nazism and rapicious Capitalism.

On July 25, 1934, he was shot by ten Austrian Nazis in a failed coup. As he laid dying, he requested a priest to administer him the Last Rites. They refused to allow it.

When news reached his friend, Italian leader Benito Mussolini. Mussolini mobilized the Italian army on the Austrian border and threatened German leader Adolf Hitler with war. Mussolini knew Hitler was behind the failed coup. He also petitioned the reigning pope, Pius XI, to solemnly and publicly excommunicate Hitler. Unfortunately the pope chose not to do so for fear of exasperating problems for the Church in Germany.
